THESE COMPARATIVELY POOR AREAS ARE CONSIDERED AS DANGEROUS, SINCE THEY ARE SAID TO BE THE HOME OF A HIGH NUMBER OF CRIMINALS, SUCH AS PUSHERS, DRUGDEALERS AND PICKPOCKETS. SINCE AROUND 2005 SO CALLED DEATH SQUADS STARTED TO APPEAR IN THESE AREAS, FOLLOWING THEIR ROLE MODEL FROM DAVAO CITY, PHILIPPINES. THEY COME IN SMALL GROUPS ON MOTORBIKES AND MURDER “CRIMINALS”. OFFICIALS DENY DIRECT CONNECTION TO THESE KILLINGS, BUT NOT ONE OUT OF THE HUNDREDS OF KILLINGS EVER LEAD TO ANY CONVICTION.
